An appeal from Nai, the creator of this pack:

Make Visual Novels and the Spooktober Visual Novel Jam Competition exist to push visual novel creators to new heights.   We rely heavily on our sponsors to afford running the competition the way we have for the past 5 years, and this year we looked towards crowdfunding as a means of ensuring our competition can continue to run and thrive.

We were saddened to find out that art, game, and story competitions like ours are not welcome on crowdfunding platforms.

Your contributions to this shader pack will be used to fund the prize pot and special categories for our upcoming competition.  These special categories encourage and challenge creators to develop new techniques and technologies in a competitive environment, which we then learn from and share.

Lets make awesome visual novels together!

Make Visual Novels RenPy Shader Pack!

Elevate your visual storytelling with our RenPy Shader Pack! This pack includes stylish shaders designed to add depth, atmosphere, and style to your RenPy projects. Whether you're creating a visual novel, interactive fiction, or a unique gaming experience, these shaders will bring your projects style!

Instructions

Just drop the included files into your RenPy project folder next to the rest of your scripts and use the supplied transforms to apply the shaders to your characters, backgrounds, layers and other assets!

What's in it?

  1. 16 Preset Transform Effects that you can just slap on (It's in MVNTemplates.rpy)
  2. Documentation for how to customize the built in effects (also in MVNTemplates.rpy)
  3. Documentation on the GLSL shader code if you want to brave that (It's in MVNTSP1.rpy)
  4. Visual Novel Propaganda (probably also in MVNTemplates.rpy)

What makes it awesome?

  1. The never before released SimulatedLighting shader lets you create Key, Fill, and Rim lights for your sprites.  Create dramatic lighting variations for your sprites to fit any mood.
  2. The Manga shader lets you stylize your already painstakingly made sprites and backgrounds.  Or you could use it to make a coloring book visual novel?
  3. The Retro set of shaders will let you finally make that fan game of that horror game you love.
  4. The Posturization Shaders(bits8 and bits16) make your visuals look more like they were made by the the people who made a game that originally inspired that horror game you love.
  5. The Regicide shader makes people think your artist hand drew dozens of variations of the same images.  No princesses were harmed in the making of this pack. (She kicked my butt)
  6. Most of these are easily customizable via the provided (and documented!) parameters.
  7. If you're still here reading the features, could you tell Tom to make it easier to supply multiple textures to shaders in RenPy?  Because I could make more, even cooler effects.
  8. Some of the comments are funny.
  9. There's a color cheat sheet at the bottom of the templates document because math.

Can't wait to try these out, thank you so much!

And I can't wait to see what awesome things you do with them!  You're welcome to share pictures here of anything you guys make with them!

My game's lighting just got even more bisexual, thank you!

Also, a note for anyone using layeredimages: You'll probably want to add mesh True to the transform!

Compared to before (with manual airbrushing):

Does there happen to be a way to set the colors based on the state of another variable? My game keeps track of which floor you're currently on, and each floor has different lighting conditions. If it was possible to apply the "right" lighting automatically, this would be a huge game changer. :O

Wow!  It's looking great!  And yes, I've actually thought about making a mention to folks using layered sprites to use that since I've had a few people come back and ask how to sort it out.

As for using a variable to adjust the lighting, you could do it with a custom written transform that accepts a variable parameters instead of hard coded ones.  I'll be working on another pack on stream this week, so I'll put some time into getting an example for you to play with on Tuesday!

Thank you so much, looking forward to it! :D

These shaders are exceptionally well researched and look great. Regicide is my favourite one. This is a top class resource for VN developers!

Thanks Endi!  I hope you're able to get a lot of mileage out of them!
